In 2019, after Florence, Bologna and Genoa, the title European Capital of Culture will be awarded once again to another Italian city, Matera, located in Basilicata in Southern Italy. This city will have passed a selection process, which already had begun in 2012, by the European Commission in conjunction with the Italian government. Matera has already won this title based on different considerations, but the most important is this: Matera's aim, of being at the forefront of the movement to strip away barriers to culture, especially through new technologies and learning, is visionary.
