The museum is situated in a group of rural buildings, adjacent to the vast archeological area of the ancient Roman city, Altinum, located near the edge of the Venice lagoon.
Exhibits are divided between the first and second floors of a former nineteenth century rice mill and are organized into two categories, pre-historic and the Roman era.
Visitors can admire: pre-Roman artifacts, which document the oldest phases of the city; remarkable reconstructed tombs from the period of Roman settlement; pottery from the Roman period and precious glassware; and important civic monuments.
The visit concludes with a late-Antiquities and early-Medieval section and one focused on the artisan trade derived from the ceramic and glass furnaces outside of town, that underscores the important role of Altino as a port city during the pre-Roman and Roman eras.
In the archeological zone surrounding the museum, there are many other monuments and exhibits dealing with various periods of history.
